The Art Studio, Inc. will host an exhibition of works from the estate of Beaumont artist Steve Hodges, with an opening reception from 7-10pm on Saturday, July 2 at in TASI’s Main Gallery. The reception is free and open to the public.
Hodges was an Assistant Professor in the Art Department at Lamar University in Beaumont through the 90’s and 00’s.
Hodges was a resident tenant in TASI’s artist spaces during the 1990s and exhibited his paintings there.
His influences were diverse: Eastern philosophy, artists Jackson Pollock and Willem DeKooning, the works of Karl Jung among many, many others.
Posthumously, his work has been exhibited at the Dishman Art Museum and Rudolph Blume Gallery in Houston with his former students, Justin Varner and Jakob Christmas, in a travelling exhibition, “The Specious Instant” in 2011-12.
Hodges influenced and nurtured many young artists during his years at Lamar University and in the community. The exhibit is brought to TASI by an anonymous collector who says:
“We want to make his work available to the people that knew him and to the community that valued him. It is also important that new viewers get the opportunity to see the work of a respected, dedicated and influential painter from Port Arthur.”
TASI will exhibit Hodges surrealistic and sometimes thematically dark, thought-provoking paintings through July 31.
