Powers at Play is a show of paintings by Sirena LaBurn and Nathan Mullins that address the forces, physical and otherwise, that influence the trajectory of our lives. From the continual march of the anthropocene to the choices we make as mentors and parents, these paintings engage in honest critique and celebration of our ultimate role as storytellers. Wheels and Old West archetypes reimagined in modern forms communicate the cyclical nature of life and death and the inherent wishes and fears found within that dance in LaBurn’s work. Mullins gleans imagery from world mythology and literary sources such as Shakespeare and David Foster Wallace to generate new myths aimed at an increasingly fatalistic future. Water recurs as a symbol of both destruction and rebirth. In the work of both is the acknowledgement of life as it is and the embrace of what is to come with a continued belief in the importance of doing the work we can while we’re here.
