Simply put, perceptions are our sensations interpreted in the light of experience. One could say that all art is based on perception, but the term is even more relevant when the art is created from the perspective of an “outsider.” Vera was born during the demise of the Soviet Union, in Leningrad, now St. Petersburg. She studied publishing and editing there, though always wanted to pursue a career in art and illustration. That opportunity arose when moved to the USA in 2013 to join her husband. As he was teaching at Lamar University she decided to earn a BFA in Fine Arts which she completed last year.
Her art reflects observations and explorations conveyed in different techniques and subjects — some formal exercises, some observations of the new world around her reflecting interest in people and nature. Whether serious or humorous, the work captures the moods and experiences during her process of assimilation.
This specific show highlights work from the past few years that span different media from printmaking to painting, drawing to mixed media illustration. Her latest work is a study for an autobiographical picture book based on family history — which preserves the memories of another country and time for her daughter.
