Matt Beshears is an artist who has one foot planted firmly in the ancient past and his tongue in his cheek.
“Mythos,” his new exhibition will open in TASI’s Maudee Carron Gallery on at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 2, as part of Beaumont’s city-wide First Thursdays event.
Beshears says the works in the exhibit reference Greek mythology.
“I think it is symbolic with elements of Surrealism and a little humor thrown in for good measure,” he says.
In keeping with TASI’s commitment to local artists, Beshears grew up in Port Arthur.
“I studied art at SMU and then worked in finance for 30+years. I resumed my art practice in 2015. I’m also taking courses toward my MFA at LSU.”
The works in this “Mythos” are toner transfers, which are digital collages. Beshears also paints, draws, and add pencil color to the transfers.
Beshears cites Southeast Texas native and revered artist Robert Rauschenberg as an influence.
“I love the way he combines elements of photography, printmaking, and painting. He’s also the most internationally famous but, locally, the least-known person from Port Arthur.”
What would Beshears like visitors to take away from his exhibit?
“A piece of my work!
Seriously, I hope people will like learning about Greek mythology as much as I enjoy it.”
