Grace Chadwick’s “Delicate Disorder” on view now in the Maudee

The Art Studio, Inc. (TASI) hosts an exhibition of digital paintings by Grace Chadwick from March 2 through March 23, in its Maudee Carron Gallery. TASI’s galleries, located at 720 Franklin St. in Beaumont, are open for viewing by the public from noon to 5pm, Tuesday through Saturday

Chadwick describes her work as surreal, fantastical, and symbolic. Her greatest influences are Studio Ghibli, folktales, and the act of visual storytelling.

“Inspired by the visual stories from comics, games, and animated films I consumed growing up, I chose imagery that gave me peace and that I had familiarity with,” Chadwick said, “Nature, animals, and women in folk tales can be seen as delicate, hurt easily by those who wish them harm. But they are also powerful and beautiful in form and in life. Embracing this, I create figures of elemental women who may be delicate like a flower or a flame, but are powerful and confident in their skin.”

A southeast Texas native residing in Port Arthur, Chadwick received a formal education in Painting at Lamar University. The exhibition will consist of archival prints of digital paintings from her latest series called “Delicate Disorder”.

“Delicate Disorder was inspired by my recovery from traumas and mental illness. Struggling with my disorders, I quickly learned how much of a delicate balance recovery can be. So I wanted to portray the positives and reframe the emotions I have associated with the word delicate. I didn’t want it to be a term to weigh me back anymore and instead be something to inspire me. Beauty can be found in delicate things, so I created fantastical imagery to illustrate that.”

Although all of the artwork on the walls was sold during the opening reception, unframed 5×7 prints are still available to purchase from TASI for $10 each. The work will be on view through Thursday March 23, 2023.

“My goal is to create portraits that can remind ourselves that one can be delicate and powerful at the same time, able to overcome any disorder or challenge,” the artist stated. “I would like for people to find self-acceptance with things they may be struggling with. I would like for people to find joy and comfort in the things that give me peace and share it with them.”
