This month’s IOI is dedicated to all things clay.
No one misses the art you didn’t make. Your legacy will be the work you leave behind as testament to the dedication of artists who bring truth and beauty to our lives.
Like a brooding hen, we incubate the fledgling artist, whatever their discipline. What we get is a seemingly infinite flow of individuals seeking something beyond everyday life.
At our inception, we felt there had to be a community outreach arm of the organization. With that in mind, our mission statement demands that we foster a tie with the artists and this community. Our engagement works in many ways. We hold classes in a variety of disciplines including printmaking, ceramics, watercolor, color theory, drawing, and photography, as well as programs tailored to people with special needs. Art therapy has become a new avenue toward improving the health of people in our community and we are working with mental health professionals to provide fun and entertaining programs with a deeper purpose of improving the hearts and minds of that unique community.
“We will continue to push, prod, inspire, and cajole you to find what your hands heart and mind want to express. These events and events at all the arts organizations in our community have something for you.”
“I want you to know what an amazing art and craft ceramics is and the alchemy that takes place in that little brick box. Inside that incredible box an entire other world exists, but only in the fiery heat, the crucible of our work and our hearts desires.
This is what I want for you! Nurture your art and never deny your passion. Embrace it. We change the world through our art.”
“When one learns to take leisurely what others takes seriously, one can take seriously about what others take leisurely.”
I think the arts have some far-reaching effects that can give anyone a sense of satisfaction, a sense of self, and a growing confidence that allows all of us to be comfortable in our own skin. Our exhibition “The Art of Mental Health” gives the rest of us a peek into the thoughts, feelings and struggles of a unique community who benefit so much with something as simple as art.
Thanks to all who came to participate in the Gumbo Clayfest ‘23 on July 6. The artists are jazzed to come back next year, and hopefully more artists will be presented! Look for a kiln workshop next February with Gary “Greenie” Greenberg, Tom Belden, Chris Leonard and possibly Steven Erickson, among others. The public is
