Ceramic artist Greg Busceme will host a clay class, Saturdays, 10 a.m. to noon, Feb. 1-29, at The Art Studio, Inc., 720 Franklin in downtown Beaumont.
The class costs $175 for the five sessions with supplies included.
Busceme has an MFA in ceramics and has taught for more than 40 years. He has exhibited in multiple solo and group shows.
“It’s just most marvelous material to have ever dealt,” Busceme said. “Here we are at a long tradition. teaching it the same way we’ve been taught for all those years. And I can’t think of a better way to start.”
Busceme said the class will teach students how to hand-build simple pots, from the first rope of clay that winds into a coil to eventually transform into a pot which goes to the kiln.
“I like watching people learn, I think the learning process is enjoyable,” he said. “Watching people learn is really fun. I let people work things out on their own.”
Ceramics is a tradition that has existed for thousands of years, Busceme said, and that working with clay increases a students’ curiosity about how things are made.
“There’s nothing better than seeing students’ faces when the finished piece is removed from the kiln,” he said. “Seeing the product of the work is what keeps one coming back for more.”
