Anna Myers: Umbra opens February 2

Works will be on view February 2 – 23 in the Maudee Carron Gallery at TASI

Amongst the ever-expanding universal network, as flourishing tentacles grasp and feed through the labyrinthian corridors of time and space, Anna Myers has established herself as an aberrant creature composer.

Throughout her undergraduate studies at Lamar University, Anna focused on both drawing and printmaking. While working on her printmaking thesis, she further developed her enigmatic style of imagery under the mentorship of Professor Meredith “Butch” Jack. After earning her BFA and
leaving the printmaking studio indefinitely, she returned to the solace of charcoal and pastel.

Within the last few years, sculptural forms began to emerge from the picture plane sanctuary. In 2017, her first sculpture, ‘Porfe’ was accepted into the TASIMJAE and placed third overall. In 2018, she successfully showcased more than forty pieces in the two-artist exhibition, “Morphogenesis”.

Since then, Anna has been focusing on expanding her audience. In 2019, her sculptures were chosen to take part in the 27th annual SculptFest celebration hosted by the Texas Society of Sculptors. There, her work was displayed alongside sixty artists from across the United States. In the following years, her pieces have been invited to show in several national juried art exhibitions.

Most recently, five of her sculptural works have been selected to participate in the fantasy themed “Curioddities” exhibit. They will be on view at the Brimstone Museum from January through March.

Artist Statement:

Art exists to elevate the average human’s experience… a sacred realm serving as a gateway through which any person can transcend the mundane. By means of stygian outré images, this artist hopes to evoke that transcendental experience.

In keeping with the traditions set by the Symbolists, charcoal depictions present the audience with a glimpse into a totally foreign domain. Set in a gloomy twilight dimension, unrecognizable figures desperately reach for the faint glow of dimming celestial bodies.

With the passage of time, these environmental manifestations have been transformed. Extracted from their picture plane sanctuary, they have been adapted for corporeal interaction. These effigies bridge the gap between two diametrically opposed worlds.
